Glossary of Terms
It is said that today’s civil engineers can have an entire conversation among themselves using only acronyms. With apologies, let us explain what many of these terms or acronyms mean as used on this website, in plain English.
Low Impact Development
The practice of using a natural process to lower the pollutant discharges from an engineering project. It is accomplished by reducing the amount of concrete and pavement as well as piping. This allows stormwater to run more slowly and infiltrate into the ground. Flows are often collected in planted basins where specific plants can absorb pollutants in their roots, further reducing discharging pollutants.
Stormwater Quality Design
The practice of studying, analyzing and designing treatment facilities that take rainfall (stormwater) and remove pollutants and reduce quantities discharging from developments.
